Step 1,2,3, and 4 of The Hero’s Journey

I started Media 196 on step 5, Crossing the First Threshold, but let me recap how I got to this point. Step 1 The Ordinary World was before I started going to college, Step 2 The Call to Adventure Occurred when I first began to think about starting college, Step 3 The refusal of the call happened when I was unsure about going to college due to a lack of funding and time, and Step 4 Meeting the mentor was when I started meeting all the college staff who have guided me through everything I needed to do to get going.
Step 5 Crossing The First Threshold
My first experience with Media 196, or Intro to 3D Design, was learning about making seamless textures and creating Previs Boards for the objects I wanted to create for the Achievement Awards.

Step 6 Tests, Allies, and Enemies
There was one test after another, as I worked my way through this quarter. It was helpful to have some really great allies, as Professor Brock and Rachel helped me work through each battle that my daughter threw at me. Being challenged so much helped me see who was on my side and believed in my and my abilities to make it through. That kind of support is encouraging beyond words could ever truly express. I have a newfound appreciation for my own strength and for the love and kindness of those that I find to be in my circle.

Step 7 Approach
Creating 3D objects in Second Life did not come without challenges. Learning to build, without actually using my hands was quite a challenge. Then as I learned how I could look at the object from all sides, it made a big difference. Zooming in, and stretching and adjusting the shapes to make them fit, became bit easier, but I do still feel it is a ways away from becoming something that comes easier to me. I just wanted to stick my hands into the computer and be able to use my hands, instead you really have to use your mind and just learn to create in a different way.

Step 8 The Ordeal
The Ordeal, for me, was time restraints, as well as fully being able to grasp how to do some of these things. Due to so many challenges with my daughter, and my PTSD, I had trouble getting back to some things, like creating my own box and tablet. Making the lightbulb and the couch were great experiences, but I wish I had been able to work more with it all. I did help design the box and tablet and created the textures.

Step 9 The Reward
I was really excited to be able to experience seeing my objects finished, in Second Life. I wish I had been able to go with Professor Brock to place my items where we discussed that they would be, but it didn’t work out. It was rewarding to see my visions come to life in 3D form.

Step 10 The Road Back
My Roadblock was not having enough time to do everything I needed to do, in the order that they needed to be done. So some things confused me and I don’t feel like I was able to get the full learning effect that was intended due to all of the extra challenges that occured for me during this quarter. This made being prepared for the presentation and the final very difficult.

Step 11 Resurrection Hero
It was really neat to walk through and see everyone’s work, during the presentation. Going through this final, and accumulating all the work and memories from this past quarter has helped me see how fast time flies, while also showing me what steady and consistent effort create. When we push through, we can see that there was more waiting for us on the other side of the roadblocks and challenges that we thought might hinder our progress. The presentation was a great way to show how the efforts in this class did not go unnoticed and it felt good to be able to share it all with the college stakeholders.

Step 12 Return With The Elixir
My Elixir is all the knowledge that I have gained in this class, and all of the textures. With these I hope to be able to create more and continue to grow my knowledge within the 3D world.
