Non-Profit Essay

The non-profit organization that I would like to focus on is the Pirate Food Pantry. This is a great and helpful resource, as it provides food for students in need. Located down the hall from the ACS office, just past the PUB, in the J building. Students can access this room for food and snacks. There is no sign up, registration or fees involved. No questions are asked and you can enter into the room with no worry of judgement or criticism and grab what you need. Even personal hygiene products are available. It is open from 7am-7pm, Monday through Friday. Holidays and Peninsula College closures may affect these times of operation. This pantry has been really helpful for my family, and I am sure many others as well.

As a single mother, with two growing teens, I have used this pantry to help feed my kids and myself. I have also depended in the personal hygiene products, picked up a great free cooking book, a Peninsula College mug and some really great pamphlets for other resources in the community. I have been really grateful for this easy to access room, with its large Peninsula College canvas bags available to be filled up with whatever you need. Sometimes when we need help, it is embarrassing to ask, or if there is an emergency situation, it is really helpful to know this pantry exists. I have been very grateful for the access to this and for the discreteness, as we don’t always want others to be aware of our struggles.

For my film project, and having my experience with using this pantry, I thought it might be a good idea to show how to get to the pantry. As there are multiple access points to get there, and once you get there, you can see how simple it is to access. I would like to bring more attention to this pantry so that more students are aware of it and easily able to access it, if they are ever in need.
