Module 1 Assignments
Learning To See Assignment – Stephen Shore’s Image Yucatan, Mexico 1990

In this photo the light is very balanced, there is not any harsh shadows or highlights. The photo is a bit blurry, particularly the two beings (the child and the chicken) which brings some nice contrast from the objects in the picture. The blur of the chicken gives the illusion of movement and paired with the pop of color on its head it really brings some life to the image. All the textures in the image are rough and grainy giving the feeling of discomfort. It feels very cold, even though this photo was taken in Mexico. The colors, or lack thereof, give off the feelings of coldness. The angle is taken from above showing how the child is small in the world. The chicken being right at the edge of the frame pulls the attention that way making you think about what is just outside the image. The image is well balanced with there being objects on either side of the child that is the main focus of the image. The mood that is conveyed from the image makes you feel sadness for the child as he seems to be living in destitution.

What Makes A Good Photography Assignment

As far as composition in this image, the horse is nicely balanced in the center of the frame with the background space being nice and even on the top, bottom, and on each side. The light being darker on one side and lighter on the other creates a nice feeling of depth. This plays into the concept of it not being about the subject as well because the horse could be replaced with any large white object and the shot would still work. Because of the contrast of the dark black background the bright white color of the horse and the lack of colors in the image(paired with the horse being right in the center)the horse immediately draws the eye. It looks like some burning and dodging was done on the image to enhance this contrast, making the highlights brighter and the shadows darker. The lighting in the image was also done well in this image as far as balancing the highlights and shadow so one doesn’t take over the other. There are no distractions in this image as there is only the horse and the background. Having just these two elements really strengthens them both. The gesture of the horse makes the image more interesting as it is doing a bowing like motion the makes it look like its either dancing out of the shadows or emerging from a battle. You can tell the image is shot well as when one eye is closed it looks the same. The one element I noticed that is missing from this picture is a punch line as I did not notice anything more after looking at the image multiple times for awhile.
Visual Literacy Assignment

These photos are from the longer walks that I take. I walk up some long mountain roads and see lots of garbage, along the main roads. Then I see beautiful clean nature, with flowers or expansive fields, with no trace of human. When I see the garbage, I process over how we are defiling the earth with our careless ways of being lazy and wasteful. I have been wanting to bring a bag and gloves with my, and a poker, to pick up the garbage. It is hard to see how humans have caused such harm and destruction to our home and to the environments around us. Mother Nature continues to take care of us, but we must learn to take better care of her, or more harm will come in the future world that our children are depending on for their future needs. Nature heals us, so we must also learn to help heal it, by recycling and finding more ways to be responsible for all of our waste.

PHOTO ANALYSIS
Feelings or Mood-
Taking these photos was very nostalgic, as they were taken at my friend’s home. This friend has been one of my dear friends since 2017, and she is now moving, back to where she is from. It was pretty emotional for me, as she has been like family, and I only learned of her moving just the pother day. Now she is abo9ut to head off on her next adventure. This house was such a peaceful place for me to go to and visit her at, with the beautiful water view the calming energies of the neighborhood being west of town, which has always been a more healing area for me, as it is further away from the cluster of the busy down.
Subject Placement –
The water and the trees are what I am most fond of here is Washington. Seeing the expansive water views and the skyward reaching evergreens always brings me great peace. I feel that their abundance in this area is what has brought me to feel most drawn to blue and green as my favorite colors, as they make me feel calm.
Multi-layered –
There are certainly many layers of meaning in these photos, as the nostalgia brings me warmth and the nature takes me to a calm state of mind.
Depth of Field –
The only aspects of these photos that are out of focus are what would be naturally out of focus to the naked eye. I didn’t think to add and soft focus, as I wanted the images to be as one would be looking at these areas, naturally.
Improvement –
If i were to take these photos again, I would get to know my camera better, beforehand. I am still learning a lot. I did take several first images to test out different ISO and F-stop settings to see how the lighting would best be captured.

Photo Analysis
Feelings/Mood – These photos are of my teenage son, so you may notice his disgruntled expressions of not being too happy for being in these photos. He is very kind to have helped me with this assignment, but he does not like to smile, which I think gives the mood this very teenage vibe of a bored teeanger who would rather be doing anything else. I like how it plays in with the artistic vibes of his face, as well.
Subject placement- Austin is sitting on a stool, in front of a makeshift home studio, next to our living room window. I liked this spot because his face would get some natural light, which is, in my opinion, the best lighting possible. He changes this pose for each assignment and it shows the different shadows of his face, and how the lighting shifts, with each movement. I really enjoyed this experience.
Multilayered – There are multiple layers of meaning here, in the emotions he has and what he gives through his different poses. There is a moodiness, as well as an artistic sense, as I love photos that are without forces expression, and are just natural.
Depth of Field – These images are all in full clarity, and I didn’t take any with a different depth of field. I didn’t believe it was necessary.
Light – The lighting is natural lighting from the window. It was what the assignment required, and I prefer it anyway, so that was great. Although, I was intending to break out my studio lights, in the hopes for a chance to use those. maybe next time.
Improvement – Maybe something I would improve on would be to not be so rushed and to give him more guidance on his poses, but I also felt his dislike for doing this so I was trying to just be quick and simple.

Photo Analysis Assignment
The feelings and mood for this photo assignment were of curiosity. Subject placement was looking at things differently than I would normally and seeing things in different viewpoints and at different angles. From modern architecture to nature, my images convey depth in different ways we are surrounded by beauty. Depth of field is different among these images as the focal point change with each image. There was no real blur, as I felt they needed to be full in spectrum of clarity. There was natural light sources for each image, even the indoor images had large widows bringing in adequate lighting. Maybe an improvement would have been to give myself more time so I could feel more relaxed and less rushed.

Leading the Eye

Photo Analysis
Getting the Leading the Eye images felt overwhelming at first, especially after reading the book and seeing the spectacular images in it. Then, as I was on a hike, then heading to the spot for the sunset, I was able to see it was not so complicated after all. I feel the mood is calming, and inviting to get the viewer to walk into nature, for their is so much beauty to see. The subject placement is a view of nature, like “step into nature”. There could potentially be multilayers, but really, it is mostly about my own love of nature and how much I value the mystery and peace within it. I enjoyed changing the focus, some are of the most forefront part, others are of the destination. The natural light is the best, and nothing else was needed. I would have gotten more variety, but really, I love nature so it would all be somewhat similar, even if I had given myself more time.
Module 8
Portrait Story

When I think of cello music, I think of emotions, as the cello has so much deep sound that comes from it, and the artist is usually conveying their own emotions through the cello. The placement of the subject was meant to look natural, as one who would be observing would focus on on this scene. There are a variety of layers in this as my friend, Jesse, was seeking to play his cello in the middle of the woods where there are some of the oldest trees in Washington State. Being in nature, feeling the energy and hearing the sounds, then also hearing the cello, and watching Jesse get into his artistic space, was transforming, on many levels of energetic connection. Some of the images are more focus don Jesse, where some are more focused on the cello, to create a deeper focus for the viewer to experience the scene. Using natural light was the best option for these photos, as there was no other lighting necessary. An improvement would have been to feel more prepared and relaxed.

Photo Analysis
For this photo assignment, the feelings and mood portrayed would be of the feelings of wonder, how the days go by. The subject is the horizon, and it is being framed by nature, which I felt would be most adequate, as nature makes for the best subject and frame. There is nothing out of focus, unless my camera was not able to gain adequate clarity. So anything out of focus was not intentional. I used natural light for these images. My improvement is that I would have marked my spot on the ground, for where had my tripod. Then should have written down how much my lens was zoomed out, to really get the most adequate framing possible for this assignment.
Week 10 – Story images

Being in nature is one of my favorite things to experience, so I love that we are surrounded with the Olympic National Forest, here in Port Angeles. In the first image you swill see how I pack and prepare for a nice day hike. Some food, a light flannel, and a nature journal make the hike more enjoyable. Getting the car packed up, and having a hiking stick on hand helps me be sure I am ready for anything. Next, getting to the trailhead, as adventure awaits. A welcoming break, as I sit and eat my lunch, while using the nature journal as a table, really useful. I love being surrounded by the trees and experiencing the nature sounds and views while I eat. As I headed out of the hike, I found a trash bin so that I could toss out my garbage, as we should be sure to leave no trace behind when we leave the woods. Onward back to my car, where I can load up for the car ride home. My backpack seems to be as warn out as I am. So much fun and so many beautiful scenic views, what a great day for a hike in the woods.
